Experience
My name is Kev Johnston and I am an experienced Design Director. Recently I have been designing a ‘Best in class’ trading experience for a global banking client and an A/B testing and data dashboard product for a TV entertainment brand. Past projects include a new payments platform for SME's called Tyl by NatWest, web design for Brewdog, helped create distraction free environments for Hold-X and a redesign of the e-commerce platform for The Jockey Club.
Alongside this I have a strong desire to grow my skillset and hone my craft. This typically manifests itself through side projects working on anything from exploring advanced prototyping up to more ambitious undertakings such as learning basic coding languages.
I am passionate about designs role in product and the value that it can bring. Increasingly this is about being an advocate for design and helping drive the importance of this a a domain level. For me this is something that I then want to filter down into the team that I manage. For me it is really important to find opportunities for my designers to grow and give them the confidence to do so.
Away from work you may find me attempting to keep up with my rampaging toddler (and recent newborn), trying to learn carpentry, watching sport or exploring new places with my bike and my Fuji.

Approach
As a product designer I am focused on problem solving. This can take many forms but ultimately it is about solving a problem or brief in a way that meets the business and user needs. Whenever I take on a project I approach it in a highly collaborative and iterative manner with a keen focus on creating clean, simple and human centred design solutions.
For me, I believe that the most effective way of working is using a sprint based methodology. Breaking the project into time boxed segments helps make it clear to everybody involved what we are trying to achieve within a certain time frame. It allows you to quantify aspects of the project in terms of effort and will massively help with planning your roadmap and project scope. Finally it adds a sense of urgency and focus (not in a panic inducing manner) that in my experience really helps key decisions to be made in a timely and effective manner.
